The Lafayette City Council consists of five members elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis. Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years (coinciding with the State General Election). Council members serve staggered, four-year terms and there are no term limits.
The November 6, 2018 General Municipal Election will fill two seats currently held by Ivor Samson and Don Tatzin.
The City Clerk is the local elections administrator and coordinates with Contra Costa County in the conduct of Municipal Elections. Persons interested in running for the office of City Council Member should contact City Clerk Joanne Robbins (925)284-1968. The successful candidates will be installed in the month of December 2018.
Any person who is 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, a resident and registered voter of the City in which they are seeking office, and who is not disqualified by the Constitution or laws of the State of California from holding a civil office, is eligible to be elected or appointed to a City Office.
Nomination papers may be obtained from the City Clerk, beginning Monday, July 16, 2018, and shall be filed with the City Clerk in person no later than 5:00 pm, Friday, August 10, 2018.
If one or more incumbents do not file nomination papers by 5:00 pm Friday, August, 10, 2018, the filing period for qualified individuals who are not currently City Council Members will be extended to Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 5:00 pm.
