New Reduced Speed Limits on Some Streets Across Lafayette

Post Date:08/06/2024

As students return to school in August, drivers should be aware of the new, lower speed limits in school zones at schools across Lafayette, as well as segments of other roads in town.  School speed limit zones can be set at a distance of 500 feet from a school building or an entrance to the school grounds.

The new reduced school zone speed limits around Lafayette public and private schools are consistent with the latest State guidelines and were adopted to enhance the safety of children, parents, and caregivers, while walking and bicycling to school. In addition, eight additional roadway segments outside of the school zones also have new lower speed limits.

“These speed limit reductions around schools and on other streets are part of the City’s larger effort to improve traffic safety and contribute towards a culture of slower driving throughout the City,” said City Manager Niroop K. Srivatsa.

Patrick Golier, Transportation & Circulation Program Manager, explained, “Once posted, the new 15 or 25 mph school zone speed limits will be in effect whenever children are present, which is generally during the periods when children are arriving at or departing from school, or during the lunchtime recess period.”

Other recent City initiatives to improve safety include the Slow Down Lafayette campaign, roadway safety improvements that have been constructed around our schools, and the relaunch of the updated Lafayette Traffic Calming Program.
