Here are some reminders to stay safe during a winter storm:

  • Pay attention to local weather forecasts and conditions; Have multiple ways to receive warnings and stay weather aware.
  • Keep your cell phone charged, and check your emergency supplies now so you are prepared in case of a power outage.
  • Keep creeks, drainage ditches and culverts on your property clear of debris. Rake up leaves and dispose of them in your greenwaste bin.
  • Secure or remove outdoor items that can blow around in strong wind.
  • Keep garbage cans and cars at least one foot away from the curb to avoid blocking storm water flows.
  • If you see a downed tree or flooding that is blocking a public road, call the 24-hour non-emergency Police Dispatch at (925) 284-5010. If you see a life-threatening situation, call 9-1-1.
  • If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and extremely dangerous. Do not touch or try to move it—and keep children and animals away. Report downed power lines immediately by calling 9-1-1 and then call PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.
  • Creeks and streams could see rapid rises during and after heavy rainfall. Standing water is likely on low-lying roadways.
  • Avoid driving during a heavy storm if possible. Drive with extra caution. If traffic signals are out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
  • Sandbag supplies are available to Lafayette residents at the fill-it-yourself sandbag stations at:
    • Corner of Mt Diablo Boulevard at Village Center
    • Corner of Camino Diablo and Loveland
