What’s in a Name?
A few months ago, some new residents asked us what do people from Lafayette call themselves? The term for this is a demonym and examples include San Franciscan, Seattleite, New Englander, etc. And, after meeting so many new community members on Tuesday evening, we wanted to hear from you. Have you used “Lafayettian” or some other demonym? We’d love to know! Send us an email at socialmedia@lovelafayette.org.

Park Theater Renovation is Underway!
I am very excited to share this milestone from The Park Theater Trust (TPTT):
We are thrilled to announce that the Park Theater’s rebirth is under way! It has been 7-plus years in the works as the all-volunteer TPTT has distilled the hopes and dreams of the community along with the need to create a sustainable enterprise into what will be a phenomenal cinema and cultural hub, and here we go!
Please note there will be a diversion to the sidewalk path in front of the Park itself due to the necessary fencing required to protect pedestrians, and the parking spaces directly in front of the building will be closed during the anticipated 14-month renovation.
The hope had been to reopen in December 2026 but the reality of the building permit process has now adjusted that to first quarter 2027. TPTT appreciates the ongoing support of the City, the Chamber, our local and regional legislative representatives, and MOST importantly, the community who has rallied behind this exciting and transformational project with enthusiasm and ongoing financial support. Please visit www.parktheatertrust.org to see the plans and learn how you can help close the gap in funding.
Upcoming Community Meeting on EBMUD’s Lafayette Reservoir Tower Upgrade Project
Visitors to Lafayette Reservoir may have noticed activity around the Lafayette Tower this week as EBMUD biologists and contractors were installing protective bird netting to help ensure that birds do not establish nests at the tower prior to the start of the Lafayette Reservoir Tower Upgrade Project. The netting will remain in place through late spring and early summer.
EBMUD will host a community meeting on February 26 at 6pm via Zoom to share what park visitors can expect during construction, discuss the anticipated construction schedule, and answer questions from the community. Community members should register for the meeting on the Lafayette Reservoir and Water System Upgrades project webpage.
EBMUD appreciates the patience and understanding of visitors while they complete these critical infrastructure upgrades. For an overview of all active construction projects at and near Lafayette Reservoir, visit their website.
Background information:
- EBMUD webpage on Lafayette Reservoir Tower Upgrade Project including renderings of the new tower during high, average and low water elevations
- City webpage on Lafayette Reservoir Tower Redesign including more background on the topic and the community effort to advocate to retain the height of the iconic tower that has symbolized Lafayette for decades.
Spring Yellowjacket Prevention Tips
Did you know the most effective time to reduce yellowjacket populations is before summer even starts? Vector control experts recommend placing yellowjacket traps with attractant bait (sold with traps or as refills) between Valentine’s Day and Father’s Day—an easy-to-remember window that aligns with the period when overwintering queen wasps emerge and begin searching for nest sites. Capturing queens early can prevent entire nests from forming, which helps reduce the number of yellowjackets we experience during summer picnics, sports events, and outdoor gatherings. While protein-based baits (bait traps with the food they are after) can help manage active wasps later in the summer, the work done in late winter and spring is key to keeping overall populations down. A little effort now can mean a more comfortable outdoor season for everyone in Lafayette. To learn more, visit www.contracostamosquito.com/yellowjackets

Advisory Regarding the California Self-Generation Incentive Program
Recently you may have received a flyer on your doorstep titled “Public Utility Notice” or “Notice to PG&E Customers” with information related to the California Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). World Premiere at Town Hall Theatre this Weekend
Mary Me by Gabby Rose runs through February 14. Determined to get through her 72hr psychiatric hold with as much detachment and sarcasm as possible, Mary starts off her first day deflecting any attempt at emotional support or bonding that gets thrown at her. Unfortunately for Mary, one exceptionally extroverted patient, Amir, is especially determined to break through her shell. But as the two grow closer, Amir's own struggles with mental health become more apparent.
This story explores the connections that can be made in unfortunate circumstances, the bits of light that can be found in the dark, and the different ways that people try to heal and better themselves, as well as the ways that people don't.
