How to Report Blocked Public Streets Due to Fallen Trees or Flooding
Please report flooding or fallen trees in the public right-of-way online at https://bit.ly/lpwrequest OR call the Public Works Hotline at (925) 934-3908. The hotline and online reporting system is monitored during normal business hours (roughly 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). If the situation needs immediate attention, call the Sherriff’s Office Dispatch at (925) 284-5010.
Only call 9-1-1 if the situation is a life-threatening emergency, such as downed power lines.
All Public Works Maintenance Requests are entered into our work order system, so please do not make duplicate requests for the same issue.
For your convenience, you can also download the My Lafayette App to your smartphone and use it to report Public Works Maintenance Requests (See instructions about downloading this free app on our website.)
Please only report the issue once. When the same issue is reported multiple times, it takes our staff time to deal with the duplicate requests. If you used the online form (via a web browser or the smartphone app), then you do not also need to call it in, and vice-versa.
Impacted Public Roads & Trails
Reminder: If you see crewmembers working in or alongside the road, please slow down and drive with caution in the area. Obey all signage and instructions from flaggers.
- RE-OPENED: 1091 to 1092 Orchard Road: To avoid flooding in the area due to a damaged culvert, sandbags have been set up to divert rainwater, and the road was temporarily closed to through traffic on 3/29; it re-opened on 3/31.
- Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail Remains Partially Closed: The Valle Vista to Westchester section of EBRPD's Lafayette Moraga Trail remains closed as of 3/22/23. This closure only affects the last half-mile on the Moraga end. The remaining 7 miles from Lafayette into Moraga is open for normal trail activity. The trail section between South Lucille Lane and Rheem Blvd. has re-opened. (It had been temporarily closed due to flooding since 12/31/23.) - Lafayette Ridge Staging Area Remains Partially Closed: The EBRPD's Lafayette Ridge Staging Area remains closed due to landslides as of 3/22/23. There is significant damage to the trails that will take some time to repair. All other park entrances to Briones are open. For updates, visit the park webpage at www.ebparks.org/parks/briones.
- City-Maintained Parks & Trails (as of 3/29/23): The Jakovina Trail remains closed. All playfields are temporarily closed during rainy weather. Residents should avoid or use extreme caution on neighborhood trails and are encouraged to be mindful of potential hazards with highly saturated ground, including mudslides, downed trees and branches.
How to Prepare for Future Storms
- Keep creeks, drainage ditches and culverts on your property clear of debris. Rake up leaves and dispose of them in your greenwaste bin.
- Keep driveway culverts (pipes located under a driveway) clear of debris. This is responsibility of the property owner. If a driveway leading to your home has a pipe under it, the City does not maintain the pipe or remove debris from the pipe. Many driveway culverts are older, were installed using corrugated metal pipe, and may have crushed ends or rusted out bottoms. If you need to replace your driveway culvert, you are responsible for hiring a contractor to complete the work and the work will require an encroachment permit.
- Pay close attention to weather forecasts and conditions.
- During storms with heavy rain and strong winds, be prepared for power outages. Remember to keep your mobile phone charged.
- Make sure to have an emergency kit for everyone in your household with food, clothing, and essential supplies for at least 3 days.
- During heavy storms, avoid areas that are prone to flooding. Do not attempt to cross a section of road or trail that has water running over it.
- Review your flood insurance policy to understand what coverage it provides. Flood insurance gives you peace of mind that you’ll receive the maximum amount available to fully recover after a flood. Visit FloodSmart.gov to learn more about how to get started.
- Sandbag Stations - During the rainy season, the City offers do-it-yourself sandbag stations for Lafayette residents and property owners at the corner of Mt Diablo Boulevard at Village Center Drive (across from the Veterans Memorial Building) AND at the corner of Camino Diablo and Loveland Drive (near the Corporation Yard).
