In November 2024, Lafayette voters approved Measure H, enacting a local sales tax of 1/2₵ for a period of 7 years to provide funding to maintain the current level of City services. The funding measure is expected to generate approximately $2.4 million each year in locally controlled funds that benefit Lafayette. All the revenue from the sales tax will go directly into the City’s General Fund; The General Fund provides funding for City services and facilities including:

  • Maintaining public streets and storm drains, and providing timely pothole repair.
  • Sustaining wildfire preparedness activities.
  • Maintaining the number of sworn police officers at the current level.
  • Services for senior citizens.
  • Maintaining city parks, open spaces, paths, and playfields.
  • Traffic safety improvements on our streets and roads for all users including people driving, biking and walking.
  • Continuing support for our community partners like the Chamber of Commerce and the School District.

Lafayette Businesses to Collect New Tax as of April 1, 2025

Starting April 1, 2025, Lafayette businesses need to collect the new transactions (sales) and use tax on taxable items. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) sent formal notices to businesses that remit sales tax regarding this rate change in the Spring of 2025, and the City mailed out a courtesy postcard.

Voter-approved transactions (sales) and use taxes imposed by cities like Measure H are called District Taxes. Learn more about District Taxes.

You may find the current tax rates for each district on CDTFA’s California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates webpage. This webpage includes a look-up tool, Find a Sales and Use Tax Rate by Address, located under the Current Tax Rates section, which allows you to find a tax rate based on an address. Lafayette’s District tax takes effect on April 1, 2025.

CDTFA’s rate look-up service may also be integrated into your sales software to compute the tax rate for each of your sales. To see if this service will work with your application, select the Looking for the Tax Rate API link at the bottom of the Find a Sales and Use Tax Rate by Address page.
