Proposed Mural Celebrates Lafayette’s Natural Beauty

The Public Art Committee is excited to share the proposed design for Lafayette’s first mural as part of the Downtown Mural Program—created by local artist Rachel Perls. This vibrant public artwork offers a bold, contemporary interpretation of the native Matilija poppy, and was approved by the Committee on August 6. It heads to City Council for final review this September—stay tuned as we move closer to bringing this exciting vision to life!

The mural features three flowing Matilija blooms—large, white, papery petals with vivid orange-yellow centers—set against a brilliant blue background inspired by the Lafayette sky. Perls uses a gestural, textural style to highlight the flower’s wild character and natural elegance, giving the piece movement and a strong connection to its environment.

With its crisp contrasts, subtle shading, and modern composition, the mural feels dreamlike yet grounded. It invites viewers to see a familiar native flower with fresh eyes—offering a bold, beautiful addition to Lafayette’s public art landscape.
