The Lafayette Library Public Art Collection

The Lafayette Library and Learning Center (LLLC), which opened its doors in November 2009, has been a cornerstone of Lafayette’s commitment to the arts. From its inception, the LLLC was envisioned not just as a repository of books but as a vibrant cultural hub. This vision was realized through a collaborative effort involving the City of Lafayette, the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation, and the Oakland Museum of California, which curated a distinctive public art collection for the library prior to its opening.

In 2008, Carin Adams, Senior Curator of Art at the Oakland Museum of California, collaborated with the City of Lafayette's Library Public Art Committee to curate a diverse and engaging art collection for the new library facility. The selection process was comprehensive and community-oriented. Practicing professional artists residing or maintaining studios in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a preference for Lafayette residents, were invited to submit small artworks across various media, suitable for different locations within the library. The public art budget allocated $60,000 for these purchases, ensuring a wide representation of artistic expressions.

Adams's curatorial expertise ensured that the selected artworks resonated with the library's mission as a cultural and educational hub. Her collaboration with the Library Public Art Committee and the broader community exemplified a commitment to integrating art into public spaces, enriching the cultural fabric of Lafayette.
