Physical Description of Work

The Brant mosaics include four square planters, four rectangular planters, and a tiled stairway along a pathway that connects the buildings to a public trail behind the site. Each planter is decorated with handmade ceramic tiles and mosaic designs inspired by nature. The surfaces feature stylized images of plants, flowers, leaves, and birds. These planters lead to a stairway covered in tile mosaics showing birds in flight among columns of air and clouds. The birds represent the brant goose—the namesake of the community.

Artist Statement            

The tile mosaic design is inspired by nature and creates a visually engaging series of planters that encourage the public to use the pathway between the buildings leading to the stairway and public trail to the north. Drawing on the natural environment of the surrounding area, the artist developed stylized designs and patterns for each planter.

The stairway features a mosaic of birds in flight among clouds, evoking the migrating brant geese that inspired the community’s name. Each handmade tile incorporates colorful glazes and textures to create depth and visual interest. The imaginative depictions of plants, flowers, and birds bring movement and vibrancy to the pathway. The color palette complements the approved exterior building colors while emphasizing the natural beauty of the trail and hills beyond.

Artist Biography

Aileen Barr has created numerous public art projects throughout the Bay Area and beyond over the past 20 years since emigrating from Ireland. She specializes in large-scale artworks made from handmade ceramic tile and mosaic, designed for parks, public spaces, transit areas, schools, and housing developments. Her projects include stairways, seating areas, sculptures, planters, and murals. Among her most recognized works are San Francisco’s tiled stairways, which have become a well-known tourist attraction featured in guidebooks and media campaigns promoting the city and other organizations.

Barr’s work invites viewers to engage with their surroundings in new ways. Through bold design and vibrant color, her installations draw attention from afar and reward closer observation with hand-carved detail and intricate surface textures. Her refined techniques in tile making and mosaic craftsmanship result in artworks that are unique, complex, and enduring—rich in color, texture, and a strong sense of place.

Deeply committed to site-specific design, Barr explores each project’s location, its function, and its relationship to both the built and natural environments. She is inspired by how communities interact with these spaces and seeks to create environments that reconnect people with elements of nature not always accessible in urban life. Her recurring themes include flora, fauna, cultural history, and the decorative and ornamental details found in architecture, pattern, and texture. These influences inform each artwork she creates.
