Changes to Lafayette’s smoking regulations

In 2012, the City Council initiated an update to the smoking regulations to address and mitigate the effects of second-hand smoke in multifamily buildings, public events and other areas. On May 13 and July 8, 2013, staff presented preliminary recommendations to the City Council. The City Council provided policy direction and has directed staff to proceed with drafting revisions to the smoking ordinance. The City Council is expected to hold hearings and adopt the new regulations in the fall of 2013.

The proposed ordinance will ban smoking in all new multifamily residential projects, in existing multifamily units leased after the regulations become effective, at public events such as farmer’s markets and concerts, in outdoor dining areas and in locations within 20 feet of any business. Since the proposed regulations will impact businesses, multi-family residential properties, residents and property owners, we encourage you to participate in the discussions.
